Quinta Val da Figueira is located on the right bank of the Douro, next to Pinhão, and was a pioneer at the end of the XIX century in grafting the local vines to American rootstocks by the owner at the time, Joaquim Leite Pereira, a famous winegrower who played an important role after the devastation caused by phylloxera (it’s said that this Estate is where Phylloxera was firstly combatted this way). The Quinta has been owned by the current owners for three generations, led today by João Calém Hoelzer, half-Duriense, half-Scottish, who manages 16 hectares of vineyards, on slopes facing the River Douro.
This Tawny 10 is one of the finest examples of the style, drinking more fluidly and less cloying than many other Tawnies out there, achieving a great level of finesse even at this stage. The particularity of João's Ports is that they are aged not in Porto but in the Douro Valley, right at the Quinta, as it was used to be done centuries ago! You can see that tradition is their flagship.
