The Shavnabada Monastery is a Medieval Georgian Orthodox Monastic Complex, located on Shavnabada Mountain. Its monks make wine here with grapes sourced from the Kakheti region. The 2007 Qvevri Rkatsiteli was made by gently crushing the grapes with a wooden press and leaving them to ferment on their skins, seeds, and stems for 6 months. After racking, the wine is aged in Qvevri for 9 years and a further 6 years in the bottle.
This is a wonderfully radiant amber coloured wine. The nose is equally as expressive – notes of exotic candied fruit and soft nougat jump out of the glass. On the palate, it is surprisingly lively and balanced. Refreshing acidity gives way to subtle notes of salted caramel and a dry sherry-like finish. A fascinating wine that warrants contemplation. We recommend serving at close to room temperature.
