Hontza, means Owl in Basque language, inspired by a couple of owls that live in the pine tree forest at Labraza, the tiny village where they live and where the winery is located. These owls bacame a symbol of the biodynamic principles in which the winemakers believe in. The medieval village is located East of Rioja Alavesa sub region (Basque country). This winery is located at an altitude of 650 metres above sea level is also blessed by a microclimate benefitting from the Föhn effect, and a wide range of biodiversity.
Zuria is an approach to Orange Wine style as it’s been just fermented on the skins for 5 days. The local white Viura and the unusual Calagreño are de-stemmed and co-fermented. Zesty yet with great concentration of fruit, subtle tannins and incredible vitality.
Hontza is the first wine that Iker Garcia made within his project. It is a blend of Tempranillo (60%) and Garnacha Tintorera (40%), sourced from 30 years old vines. Fermented and aged in french old barrels of 500L and in an amphora of 1600L. Production of 4500 bottles. Generous dark fruits, with a great deal of complexity, yet feeling the freshness of the Rioja Alavesa.
